Supreme Court rejects AL appeal over immigration law

Rich believes the state could ask the court for a reconsideration, but he is unsure if the attorney general plans to seek one.

ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the state of Alabama's request for a new look at the state's immigration law.

The Justices will not revive the section of the law that made it a crime to harbor people living here illegally.

Justice Antonin Scalia was the only Justice who voted to hear the appeal.

This appeal challenged the ruling by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that stated immigration is a federal issue.

The bill's sponsor, Representative Kerry Rich of Albertville, said the federal government's handling of immigration is the reason he pushed for the law in the first place.

"And I agree that the federal government should handle it, but the problem is the federal government is not handling it," Rich said.

Local humanitarian groups call this ruling a win, saying they're relieved they will not face charges for harboring illegal immigrants.

Recovery committee meets for final time since 2011 tornadoes

JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- It's been two years since tornadoes ravaged North Alabama.

But, the work for the Jackson and DeKalb County Long-term Recovery Committee is just now coming to an end.

The group recently held their final meeting since the storms first broke out on April 27, 2011.

Volunteers came from 27 states and from Canada, too.

"It wears us out sometimes and stretches us and it keeps us busy, but it's been a good-busy, because we know we're doing a good thing. We know we're helping people and we give God all the glory," said committee chairman David Patty.

So far, the projects have run close to a total of $670,000.

Patty said, however, they have volunteers scheduled for the next several months.

He expects the final work to be completed sometime in August.

Man files $12-million lawsuit against Marshall Co.

The audit claims the revenue commissioner gave some property tax breaks he should not have.

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A $12-million lawsuit was filed against Marshall County.

Attorneys said they have issues with how the commission handled serious problems in the county's revenue office.

The audit claims the revenue commissioner gave some property tax breaks he should not have, which cost the county money it desperately needs.

Through an attorney, Kenneth Downs of Grant filed the claim on Tuesday.

It states Revenue Commissioner Joey Masters reduced property taxes for friends, political supporters, allies, and wealthy individuals for a three year period from 2008 to 2010.

While state revenue commission officials have said they are only assisting the local revenue office since the audit, the claim states Masters has been removed from his duties for illegal activities, and the commission has banned him from the courthouse.

Commission Attorney Clint Maze said they plan to ask a judge to dismiss the claim.
