Boaz schools turn surplus, give money to employees

A total of $160,000 was handed out.

BOAZ, AL (WAFF)- The Boaz City School system turned a surplus in its budget, and gave the money to their employees.

Checks were handed out to employees at a staff meeting after school on Thursday at Boaz Intermediate School.

A board member was at each of the city's schools handing out $600 checks to full time employees and $300 for part time employees.

School officials said teachers haven't had a raise since 2007.

"It's what we need to do.  We talk about being about people and developing the path and practice.  It's important as superintendent and this board and all our principals to give back," said superintendent Mark Isley.

A total of $160,000 was handed out.

School board officials said they hope they can do it again in the future.

Drowsy driving: Falling asleep behind the wheel

SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF)- Here's some information that could give you nightmares: A recent study from the CDC shows, one in 24 adults admit to falling asleep while they were driving.  Health officials say that number is probably higher because some people probably don't realize that they have nodded off.

That's a scary statistic that Charisma LaRue can identify with.

"I was driving home, I remember the sun was shining, it was a pretty day, the middle of the day and I was going across the Skyline on 79 and I fell asleep," she said.

It took only a few seconds for LaRue to go from the road to a ravine.

Sand Mountain crews work to clean up storm damage

Work has continued at the Desoto State Park

DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Crews are still cleaning up at Desoto State Park in DeKalb County, which was damaged during Monday's storms.

On Wednesday, they had a little help from a group of Alabama Baptists.

The Baptist Association played a key role in the tornado damage from two years ago, so they pulled their chainsaws out again to help.

Since Tuesday, work has continued at the Desoto State Park.  Trees and their limbs are now gone from atop the lodge roof where they were on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, power crews were on scene Wednesday attempting to restore power to the facility that is temporarily running on generator power.

The Alabama Baptists brought in a crew of a dozen people from Jackson and DeKalb counties to aid in the cleanup. The group brought donated equipment and provided free labor to help get the park back open as quickly as possible.

Report: Albertville storm damage caused by 90-100 MPH winds

ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The extensive storm damage in Albertville Monday was caused by straightline winds, not a tornado.

In a damage report, the National Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm produced extensive straightline wind damage in several areas across town.

A brick building sustained significant roof damage at the intersection of Highway 431 and Mathis Mill Road. A large section of the roof was lifted and peeled off. Wooden power poles were snapped, and a gas station sign was destroyed. The debris was strewn well into Highway 431.

On the north side of the road at the intersection of Highland Avenue, a BBQ restaurant sustained major damage. A building had roof damage, and a sign was heavily damaged.

The damage in Albertville was consistent with straightline winds of 90 to 100 MPH, according to the NWS.

NWS to tour Marshall, DeKalb storm damage

Rogersville Storm Damage

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The National Weather Service will tour storm damage in DeKalb and Marshall counties Tuesday, to see if tornadoes struck those areas.

Damage was reported across North Alabama after thunderstorms moved through Monday.

Extensive damage was reported in Kilpatrick, in DeKalb County. At least ten homes were destroyed. Crossville Fire Department said displaced families in the Kilpatrick area can find shelter at Crossville High School. Seven injuries were reported throughout the county.

At least three buildings were damaged in Albertville on Highway 431 and Rose Road. The strong winds blew part of the roof of one business onto Highway 431 and downed plenty of power lines. Police shut down Highway 431 for several hours while they cleared the road and repaired the power lines. There were several uprooted trees that damaged homes and blocked roads. No injuries were reported.
