AG launches 2013 Safe Schools Initiative, invites nominations

Attorney General Luther Strange is reinstituting the Attorney General’s Safe Schools Initiative with a new emphasis on encouraging technological advances to deal with the challenges experienced by today’s schools and students.  In a letter sent last week, the Attorney General notified Alabama schools and invited nominations for the 2013 Awards of Excellence.

“The issue of ensuring safe schools for our students has never been more important,” said Attorney General Strange. “These awards have previously provided the opportunity to identify and recognize excellence in school safety. With the revitalization of this program, special emphasis will be placed on the use of technology to ensure that our schools are safe,” wrote Attorney General Strange to principals and superintendents throughout the state.  “My office will also be available to provide constructive feedback to the nominees on how they might improve their existing school safety plans."

Alabama releases scores from No Child Left Behind

Alabama releases scores from No Child Left Behind

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - The state Department of Education says 75 percent of Alabama schools made adequate yearly progress, up from nearly 73 percent last year. But the department got federal approval to use the 2011 passing levels in 2012.

Those results came Thursday as state officials announced which schools and which school systems made adequate yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind Law.

The federal law seeks to have all students performing at the proficient level for their grades in math and reading by 2014.

This may be the last time that Alabama officials announce the scores. They are asking the U.S. Department of Education for a waiver to replace adequate yearly progress with a new state-developed assessment program called Plan 2020.

Marshall County Schools did not make AYP.
